Joining information

If you are considering joining Scouts BSA, congratulations! Scouting is a great program, reinforcing Citizenship, Leadership and Personal Fitness. Scouts BSA is for youth aged 10 (must be in 5th grade) to 17.

Troop 671 is a very active group with 40+ youth from the Wildwood, Gurnee and Grayslake areas. We are a Scout-led troop and our Scouts do a great job leading meetings, planning activities and places to camp; as well as providing service to our community. We enjoy the outdoors and have camping opportunities every month of the year.

To begin your adventure fill out an application online or reach out to our Membership Coordinator. We will answer any questions you might have about Scouting, Troop 671, and how your child can get involved.

Upon joining the Troop, youth new to Scouting must pay a total of $176.65. Part of this fee is collected by our council when you complete the online application. The balance is due to the troop. Webelos (Arrow of Light) Scouts crossing over into the Troop after January will pay a fee of $60.00. The Troop in return will provide the Scout the following:

  • Troop Neckerchief
  • Neckerchief Slide
  • Scouts BSA Handbook
  • Green shoulder loops for uniform shirt
  • Troop numeral with 65-year veteran unit bar, single patch
  • Northeast Illinois Council Strip
  • World Crest
  • Patrol Emblem, once a patrol is chosen
  • All awards & recognition items for the year.
  • National dues paid up for remainder of the year with the Troop

Annually thereafter, our council collects a registration fee by the end of each year. Included in this is:

  • BSA National Registration Fee
  • Northeast Illinois Council fund
  • Scout Life Magazine (optional, but highly recommended!)
  • All awards & recognition items for the year

The Scout must obtain the Scout Shirt and any other patch he is eligible to display on the uniform shirt i.e. Arrow of Light, religious awards, etc. The Scout is encouraged to obtain official uniform pants or shorts; and is required by the time he goes before the First Class Board of Review. Our Troop maintains a supply of experienced uniforms from which the Scouts may borrow uniform items instead of purchasing them, check with the Scoutmaster for availability!

Our Troop attends summer camp at Camp Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan during Session 1 each summer. Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan Scout Reservation is the Northeast Illinois Council’s summer camp. All Scouts and adults must be registered members of our unit and have a completed annual health & medical form with physical to attend summer camp.

The Troop typically has an one weekend campout a month. A typical 3-day, 2-night camping trip is approximately $25.00 but can be more if a special activity or attraction is in the plans. Longer distance camping trips such as driving to Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan for a long weekend campout or summer camp may have a surcharge to help cover our adult volunteers’ fuel expenses.

If you have any questions, the Scout should first contact his Patrol Leader. If the Patrol Leader cannot answer the question, contact the Senior Patrol Leader. If the Senior Patrol Leader cannot answer the question, contact the Scoutmaster, Allan Short at 224-735-0308 (cell).
